Studying at Northern Sydney Intensive English Centre
Northern Sydney Intensive English Centre proudly supports and welcomes international students preparing to study at high schools in NSW.
As well as learning English, students attending Northern Sydney IEC participate in orientation, settlement and wellbeing programs to help prepare them for entry into high school and to help enhance their experience of living and learning in Australia.
What do students learn?
Students learn English by studying a range of text types related to high school subject areas (eg. English, Mathematics, HSIE: Geography/ Commerce (senior students only)/ History, Science).
The topics and skills in these subject areas are adapted for our English language learners.
Who helps the International students?
Our International Student Coordinator assists students with a range of issues as they settle into life in Australia and also organises activities for their enjoyment.
Our School counsellor can assist with providing support and advice for the emotional, mental and physical wellbeing of students.
Our experienced teachers devise EALD learning programs and help students as they strive to achieve their goals.
Our School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) (bilingual) - assist with translations, communication with parents and supporting students in class.
(Languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Persian, Thai, Ukrainian and Vietnamese)
What are some other student activities?
During their time at NSIEC, students will have opportunities to participate in many different activities.
A group Orientation Program which has two parts helps students in their first few weeks. This includes an introductory meeting to explain about school rules, student rights and responsibilities. Then, there is a tour of the local area including libraries, police stations, medical centres, youth centres and other places which students may need.
As part of the teaching and learning program, in each term, every class has an excursion to various places in Sydney related to their studies and to help them with cultural understanding.
Organised social activities give students a break from study and assist them to build friendships. Recent activities have included barbecues and picnics, visiting special events including the Vivid light festival and going bowling.
