What is an IEC?
Intensive English Centres (IECs) are for high school students who have just arrived in Australia and don’t speak English. These students attend an IEC before enrolling in their local high school. IECs also help students and their families settle into Australian society.
About Northern Sydney IEC
Northern Sydney IEC is located on the leafy grounds of St Ives High School, NSW. Our IEC has been in operation for over 40 years, opening in 1979. It was originally located on the grounds of Chatswood High School.
Our secondary teachers are trained to teach English as an Additional Language / Dialect. At our school we also have administrative staff and SLSOs (Student Learning Support Officers) who work as translators or assist students with additional learning needs. We are a very multicultural team, with students and staff coming from all over the world.

Students must either be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or an approved visa holder who wishes to study in a NSW government high school after completing the IEC English program.

Students are assessed on enrolment and placed in an age appropriate and English level appropriate class where they study English, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music and personal development.
The average length of stay at the IEC is 35 weeks, after which time students transition to their local government high school.
